SPIRIT OF 45
Here is the 3rd event, conducted by the Alaska Vets Motorcycle Club at the Ft. Richardson National Cemetery. There was a presentation of the colors, pledge of allegiance, wreath laying, and Fallen Warrior Ceremony. A very unique fact of this location, is that this is the only national cemetery to have an enemy of the United States buried in it. There are 135 Japanese soldiers buried there. They were part of the enemy force that occupied the Aleutian Islands during WWII. They all committed seppuku upon the loss of their foothold. Also buried in this cemetery is the first American killed during the invasion of the Aleutian Islands, a male school teacher. Finally, there are a few Soviet, Canadian, and British flight crews buried here from the airplane exchange that crashed during WWII. Thanks for all you do and the Alaska Vets MC and the Last Frontier Honor Flight are going to Keep the Spirit Alive in Alaska from now on!
